:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Meg Crowley -- Mostly good until it wasn’t... : The book was very interesting and well presented until (and I run into this problem on their podcast when they talk about American cases) they gave inaccurate information about the Karla Homolka case— the Canadian govt. was not prevented from recharging her by “double jeopardy” for one Double Jeopardy is not the same in the Canada as it is in the United States- there are well known acquittals that have been overturned on appeal. The prosecution could have revoked the plea agreement after they found out she lied as it was contingent on her being truthful, they *chose* not to which is what caused outrage about the “Deal with the Devil.” The research was sloppy- it is very easy to gather this information, there are entire books written about the plea bargain itself and to get something this big wrong makes me wonder what else they make up in the book that I just don’t know as much about. Another major drawback is the chapter on bigotry- they really jumped the shark, I have the audiobook and Hannah sounds insane when saying that black serial killers aren’t well known because serial killers are f***able and the media focuses on non-whites as non-sexy criminals. Stick to facts (real facts) not ludicrous conjecture. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andrea B. -- If you enjoy True Crime Podcasts, this book is for you! : I love this book! Very well researched but presented in a way that does not feel like reading a textbook. The authors use peer reviews studies from experts in multiple disciplines to back up their points and provide examples from true crime cases to help us make the real world connections. I think I most appreciated the chapter on Incels (lots of really unsettling information in that chapter) and the Insanity defense (explained the distinction between insanity and mental illness). As a fan of the podcast, I could actually hear Hannah and Suruthi reading this in my head. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from avid reader -- Great True-Crime Book -- I learned a lot! : I've been a true-crime junkie since I was a teenager, and I pretty much know all the major names and their crimes, but I learned a lot from this book--and, not to sound too cliche, it really made me think. In the chapter "Insanity," for example, they do a great comparison between the Andrea Yates and Susan Smith cases, which made me view those cases (well, Andrea's anyway) in a whole different light. And their chapter on Misogyny? Well, they even made incels temporarily interesting (and forever terrifying). ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021 )
