  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Arianna -- Tortured souls : First I do have to say that it is difficult to read this translation. However the characters and story are so compelling I was drawn past this hurdle into a in depth view of a dual descent into madness born of repression, lassitude, and desire. The entire story is mesmerizing. Just hang in there with the translation.. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John C. Sandberg -- The incredible detail of degradation of murderers minds : This book is as if the author had done this unrelenting act of misdeed and mania himself. The detail in describing the characters' plight is as if to know exactly why and what happens to people guilty of great misdeed, as if the author was privy to all reasons why and precisely how the deleterious inner workings of aftermath occur in the face of such unendingly selfish crime. A thorough documentation of the unraveling stages of such an act. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2019 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- If you don’t want to read a dark, dismal subject, avoid it. : This book relentlessly picks at the subject at hand both in The French and English versions. I’ve read both. The French version succeeds, for some reason. The English one not. The English version made me wish the plot were much shorter and it seemed to plod on sooo long. I don’t know why. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from William Shriver -- Great Edition for the Intermediate Learner : This edition of THERESE RAQUIN is set up for you to read in French without ever having to resort to a dictionary. It marks the more difficult words of each line, then defines them directly across in the margin. It also has footnotes that define full phrases and give comment on social context, etc. Finally, it contains a French-English glossary in the back for many of the other words in the novel. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Anna Hewett -- It's just a terrible train wreck unfolding before your eyes : I was glued to this super-messed up story the whole time! It's just a terrible train wreck unfolding before your eyes. A very well written train wreck. Very much like Greek tragedy, in which you know that the main character is headed for doom from the start. You know this is not going to end well, you are compelled to read on. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- This was a love story. : This was a love story....no wait! This was a horror story! I have never read a book that combined the two opposite passions and created a beautiful, heartbreaking story line. This is the way books were meant to be, with a story line that you still think about long after you have finished reading it. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Donald H. Davis -- Hooked from the opening bell : A love story without F bombs: Nice change ( Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2014 )
  • from Patricia -- VINE VOICE : A haunting classic of suppression adultery and murder ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Bisset -- Dark Paris : The translation, introduction and notes by Robin Buds are excellent. This is an intense, claustrophobic novel firmly set within historic Paris with the Seine as an omnipresent element. It is more than a melodrama. In spite of the abuse which Zola received on its publication, it is intrinsically moralistic. The writing is painterly, but with little relief chiaroscuro. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pat A -- Fantastic book : I first read this some 30 years back at University after seeing a brilliant production ar De Montfort University. A favourite of mine ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ben -- Zola at his best : Zola as his best. A very fine novel, which maybe set in the 19th century, but rings true still today ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 24, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charlie's Mum -- One of the best books I've ever read : I love Emile Zola's writing and in my opinion this is his best book. It's a very serious novel, very dark, and the story begins in a very oppressive, property stricken setting. As with all of Zola's characters, they really seem to be alive and are totally believable. At the heart of the story is the lengths that human beings will go to, to satisfy their desires. It's a brilliant book, very absorbing and also extremely tense in places. I thoroughly recommend this book, it's a classic! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ruthy -- I love this book : This book is so beautifully written. It is a book to be read slowly and enjoyed. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 2, 2021 )
