  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from E. Rohman -- Oh Tori : I had a passionate love affair with Tori Amos when I first discovered her....hundreds...and I mean HUNDREDS of dollars chasing down bootlegs and discontinued singles and LP's. My passion for her has waned over the years, but she still occupies a special corner in my heart. I'm not sure what I was expecting while reading this book. Tori's mind is so creative and buzzing that she jumps from subject to subject on the turn of a dime, and sometimes leaves you going back over paragraphs to see if you missed anything. I don't think it added anything to her mythos or her political stance, but instead, gave a glancing look at her creative process. Really and truly only for the die-hard Ears with Feet out there. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from David Golden -- Tori Amos gets in her own way : If you're a die-hard Tori Amos fan, odds are you'll love this book. She gets very personal recounting her family history and musical career, her interactions with fans, and the meaning behind her songs. But if you're a casual fan or not too familiar with her music and career, you may be left scratching your head. Tori wants to help fellow musicians who may be struggling with inspiration and creating music, but she gets in her own way. She writes that the Muses from ancient Greek mythology are alive and well, mysteriously appearing and speaking to her. While this makes for a fascinating tale, it doesn't really help the average musician who believes a muse is simply that which inspires them, be it a person, place, event, or work of art, and not some supernatural entity waking them up in the middle of the night and taking them for a walk. It would be nice if Tori was merely using artistic license to make her points, but one gets the feeling she actually believes her encounters with ancient Muses are really happening. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Melvin Bashans -- Perfection : Tori Amos' new book Resistance is absolutely perfection. Even non Tori fans would enjoy it. It's beautifully written, empowering, moving, political, spiritual, magical, filled with tools we can use to navigate these strange times and so much more. I can't find the words to describe how amazing it is. My husband and I read it out loud the other night from cover to cover. There's an audio book version that she reads. I'll probably buy that too, it was that frigging good that I already want to hear her read it. 5 out of 5 stars!!! ( Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J -- Book content is GREAT, but am not sure that I would buy another book again directly from Amazon. : This is the book that I have been waiting for and Tori does not disappoint. I love how she lists specific songs, gives background into the origins of that song and successfully describes how the song relates to past and current events. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Fred D. Bline -- An accurate depiction of a chaotic time : Having been a great admirer and fan of Tori since the first time I heard her in 1992, I have gained great insight and strength from her words and actions. Her second book is an important expose on what was being thought and felt during a time when we all realized that the things we had long taken for granted were not at all assured. All people, men and women, liberal and conservative, should read this book and take the time to honestly examine what their values are and if those in power truly exemplify them. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jenn67 -- For the love of Tori Amos : I first heard songs off her album “Little Earthquakes” in 1990 or 1991. I have been ride or die with Tori Amos ever since. I enjoyed every word of this book. I can’t wait for the new album! ( Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Desireé (Unbound Book Reviews) -- Poignant and almost Prophetic. : A poignant read with incredible political and creative themes woven beautifully throughout. I recommend purchasing the audiobook as well. I've been listening to Tori for over 15 years and have valued not only listening to her music but her thoughts and experiences as well. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from RealityCheque -- Oh Tori : twenty words minimum ( Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2020 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Anonymous -- Rambling and unsatisfying : Tori is a musical powerhouse, a unique creative talent and someone whose career I have followed from the start. I enjoyed those parts of the book that shed light on the creative process behind the music and in particular the sections devoted to Tori's grief at losing her mother, but there are large sections of this book which I would define as 'skippable'. Tori aims to connect the lived experience of her life to the wider political landscape and the end result is a mish-mash of ramblings about politics and more esoteric bullshit about Song Beings. If you've ever been baffled by the impressionist nature of Tori's lyrics, this book will strike you as refreshingly candid and to-the-point, but I feel it was an unnecessary project and brings nothing to the table we did not already know. I enjoyed the 'In the Studio' book much more. I wish Tori had written a straight up biography rather than merge an autobiography with political ramblings. Nice to see the lyrics of a new song however: 'Mary's Raven' - where Tori has missed the mark with this, she will surely hit the mark with her music. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Matt -- Wonderful : Another brilliant addition to Tori’s impressive body of work. I’m so impressed with how she continues to push artistic and creative boundaries with each new project. This is an inspiring and heartfelt account of important moments in her life and the role of the artist in these difficult times, which are guided by some of her wonderful songs. Can’t wait for her next project. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 10, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- It'll get you thinking : I didn't know what to expect from the book when buying it. I haven't really listened to Tori Amos over the years but saw the book mentioned in a Rough Trade advert and then reviewed in the Guardian. Being a music fan I thought I'd give it a go . Overall it was an excellent read with insights into Tori's musical development, as well as some thought provoking sections on the big social issues impacting on a!l of us. The overall message I took from the book is to be true to yourself and don't let others force you off your chosen path. Definitely recommend giving it a read, even if not a fan of the music. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Aidan Doyle -- Fantastic read : I've been listening to Tori's Music and read her first book again before reading this. It offers another beautiful insight into her creative process, her journey and deeper reflection on songs that I have listened to and loved for many years. How she got through that window of deep grief was also inspiring and helped me process my own grief. Love you even more now Tori and so excited to here the new album ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 6, 2020 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Kim -- Unentertaining and self indulgent : I love Tori but thiusv is difficult, impenetrable stuff. It's hard to know what she's rambling on about and the overall impression is that she's slightly unhinged. Like most left thinking people, her vision is manichean so there is no room for nuanced debate, just cliched polemic. However the real problem is that the book is dull and gives no real insight into her life. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 12, 2021 )
